Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics
Welcome to the Department of Orthodontics of Modern Dental College & Research Centre. Orthodontics, the first specialty of dentistry; is concerned with aligning the teeth and jaws to improve one’s smile, oral health and function. The mission of the Department is directed at holistic academic and moral development of graduate and post graduate students; to provide an environment to encourage and support research, with utmost intention to provide quality orthodontic care to the society.
It occupies a prominent location on the first floor of the institution building; Facilities include a graduate and a post-graduate orthodontic clinic and laboratory; reception and waiting area; sterilization area, department library, photography section, record room, orthodontic technique section for undergraduates, seminar room and faculty cabins. Department is equipped with the latest state-of-the-art equipments and has adequate clinical material both providing a conducive atmosphere for a balanced academic program.
Departmental research activities are quite broad covering such areas as imaging technology, FEM, material and clinical research, psychosocial aspects of health care, as well as, being focused on fundamental basic science research and discovery.
Undergraduate Training
Comprehensive dental health care requires that the general dentist should have basic knowledge of Orthodontic and Dentofacial problems. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking and problem-solving skills while underscoring the distinction between limited and comprehensive orthodontic treatment and the indications for each level of service. Students are challenged to demonstrate their ability to recognize, describe, evaluate, and manage orthodontic problems based on clinical case histories and clinical simulation.
Post graduate Training
The Orthodontics Postgraduate Training Program is designed to train clinical specialists at the postgraduate level in subject matter which is covered extensively by Seminars, Journal Clubs and Lectures. Emphasis is laid on a thorough diagnosis of all cases followed by critical understanding of each treatment philosophy and the ability to apply them clinically. Since many corrective orthodontic problems involve adolescents, there is a strong emphasis on growth and development. Students also gain experience in preventive and interceptive orthodontic care with pre-adolescents. The management of adult patients is also emphasized through courses such as TMJ therapy and Orthognathic Surgery.
